Starry Night Pro FAQ

You have to change your home location by selecting "Go | Set Home Location" and changing your location from this window. Do not change your information by clicking on the "Location" button in the Tools Palette. This just changes your current viewing location, not your home location.

The best site for finding the latitude and longitude of any city is probably Heavens-Above. If you are located in the United States, you can also use ZipInfo (to find the latitude and longitude by ZIP code) or the USGS (to query by geographical feature). If you type in your home location's co-ordinates instead of choosing from the list of cities in Starry Night, you must also make sure that your time zone is entered correctly. Take a look at the World Time Zone Map if you do not know your location.

Please see the Custom Horizons page and the Nodes and Pictures page for information on editing your horizon. Several special questions not covered on these pages are answered below. Note that the information on editing the horizon in the 1st edition of the Starry Night Pro User's Guide has several errors. The new electronic version of the User's Guide (included with all Internet updates) will have the correct information.

Navigate down to the "Starry Night Pro/Starry Night Pro Data/Horizons" folder on your hard drive. Place any images you wish to add to the program in this folder. Then start Starry Night Pro and select "Edit | Edit Horizon". If you double-click on an image of a tree or cloud, its Info Window comes up. The dropbox near the top of this window has a list of other images. Any images you put in the "Horizons" folder should now appear in this list. You can select them and then move them around or resize them like any of the default horizon images.

Navigate down to the "Starry Night Pro/Starry Night Pro Data/Horizons" folder on your hard drive. There is a file here called "Earth.txt" which has the horizon picture. Make a copy of this file in the same directory, and call it something different, for example "Backyard.txt". When you open up Starry Night Pro next time, go to "Settings-Horizon". In the "Profile" dropbox you will see two choices-"Earth" and "Backyard". Choose "Backyard" and then choose "Edit | Edit Horizon". Any changes you make will be saved to the "Backyard" horizon file. You can add additional horizons in the same fashion. To choose which of your horizons to display, just choose "Settings | Horizon" and change the horizon in the "Profile" dropbox.
