Starry Night Pro FAQ

Back to Main FAQ

The name of the application file is "starrynight.exe" and it is in the "Starry Night Pro" folder on your hard drive. On Windows, you can run the program by clicking the "Start" button on your desktop, then choosing "Programs | Starry Night Pro".

This usually means that your computer doesn't meet the system requirements for Starry Night Pro. On Windows, the most common problem is a lack of RAM. You need at least 24 MB of RAM, and if you only have 24 or 32 MB, you should close all other applications before trying to run Starry Night. If you have a Macintosh, the most common problem is trying to run Starry Night Pro on a processor that is too old. You need a PowerPC to run Starry Night Pro and it will not work on a 68K machine.

Turning off "processor cycling" in the Energy Saver Control Panel should fix the problem.

We have released a patch which fixes this problem. First, determine your current version of Starry Night by choosing "About Starry Night" from the Help menu. There will be a code in the bottom left corner. The first 3 numbers in this code are your version number, for example "310" means that you have version 3.1.0. Once you know your version number, visit our updates page and download the appropriate updater. Double-click the updater to update your copy of Starry Night (make sure that Starry Night is not running when you run the updater) and your freezing problem should then be gone.

There appears to be a conflict between Starry Night and some telephony software programs, in particular FaxTalk Communicator and CallSoft, but perhaps some others as well. You will need to turn these programs off before using Starry Night.

If this happens, follow the instructions below , and make sure you turn night vision off in the future before exiting Starry Night. To fix the problem, open Starry Night Pro and choose Settings->Night Vision from the menu. Then choose Settings->Night Vision again and click the "Brighten" button. Exit Starry Night and restart your computer. If your monitor is still in night vision mode, download the file ResetGammaRamp.exe and double-click this file to restore your monitor settings.

This error can occur if your monitor display is set to 256 colour mode. Right-click the mouse on your desktop background and choose "Properties" to open the Display Properties window. Click the "Settings" tab. Increase the "Number of colours" or "Colour Quality" to 16-bit (also known as high colour, or thousands of colours), 24-bit (also known as true colour, or millions of colours) or 32-bit, and then press "OK" to fix this problem.

This usually means that your computer doesn't meet the system requirements for Starry Night. On Windows, the most common problem is a lack of RAM. You need at least 24 MB of RAM, and if you only have 24 or 32 MB, you should close all other applications before trying to run Starry Night. One other possibility is that you are running a program named "MacroMagic". This program appears to conflict with Starry Night and you need to turn it off before running Starry Night.

If your computer meets the system requirements and you are not running "MacroMagic", either QuickTime or Starry Night may not be installed properly. The first step is to determine if QuickTime is working. Click the Start button on your desktop and choose Programs->QuickTime->QuickTime Player to open the QuickTime Player. Choose File->Open from the QuickTime menu and open the file "Sample.mov". If this movie plays properly, we need to re-install Starry Night. If the movie does NOT play properly, we need to re-install QuickTime. Follow these steps for the re-install:

  1. Close all other programs.
  2. Disable any anti-virus software on your computer.
  3. Type the Ctrl-Alt-Delete keys to list the tasks running on your computer. End every task in this list except Systray and Explorer.
  4. Re-install Starry Night or QuickTime.

This should allow for a clean install. If the problem remains, one of your preferences files may have become corrupted. Try deleting the folder Program Files\Starry Night Pro\Starry Night Pro Data\Prefs from your hard drive and then try to run Starry Night again.
