Yes, you should remove version 3 of Starry Night Backyard from your computer before installing the new version. You may have customized version 3 in some ways (for example, by adding images, creating custom settings or using the Orbit Editor).

To transfer this information to your new version of Starry Night Backyard, first create a new folder on your hard drive. Then save all of the customized files from version 3 in this folder. See “Backing Up Custom Data” on page 118 of your User's Guide for information on the location of all customized files. The file structure has not changed between versions 3 and 4 of Starry Night Backyard, with the exceptions that the “Starry Night Backyard Data” folder is now known as the “Sky Data” folder and the “Custom Images” folder and files are now known as “User Images”.

Once you have backed up these files, uninstall the existing version of Starry Night Backyard, then install the new version. Once the new version is successfully installed, you can then place your saved custom files in the appropriate folders, overwriting Starry Night Backyard’s default files when necessary.

This usually occurs if you have other applications or utilities running at the same time you run the installer. You should close all other applications, disable any anti-virus software utilities, and then try to run the installer again. Another possible culprit is the Microsoft IntelliPoint Wheel. To disable this during installation, press the Ctrl-Alt-Delete keys simultaneously. This will bring up a list of the tasks running on your computer. Click on the program "mswheel", and then click the "End Task" button.

If you still have problems, you can try to perform a "manual install" of Starry Night Backyard. Insert the Starry Night Backyard CD into your computer. Click the Start button on your desktop and choose Programs->Windows Explorer or Programs->Accessories->Windows Explorer. This opens Windows Explorer and the left side of the new window should display a list of the different drives on your computer. Double-click on the CD drive (this probably reads D: Starry Night). Doing this should display a list of the subfolders on the Starry Night Backyard CD. There should be a folder entitled simply "SN". Right-click the mouse on this folder. This should bring up a menu. Choose "Copy" from the menu.

Now we need to paste the copied folder into the correct place. The left side of Windows Explorer should still show a list of the drives on your computer. Double-click on your hard drive (probably called the C drive). This will list the subfolders on the C drive. There should be a folder called "Program Files". Right-click the mouse on this folder and choose "Paste" from the menu that pops up. This will paste the SN folder inside this file. Rename the SN folder to "Starry Night Backyard 4".

Now we need to place a shortcut to Starry Night on the desktop. Double-click on the "Program Files" folder. This will bring up a list of subfolders, and there should now be one called Starry Night Backyard 4. Double-click on this folder. The RIGHT side of Windows Explorer should show the files and folders which are inside the Starry Night Backyard folder. There should be a file called "starrynight.exe" which is listed as an "application file". Right-click on this file and choose "Create shortcut". This creates a new file called "Shortcut to starrynight.exe" in the same folder. Click and drag this file from Windows Explorer onto your desktop. This will place the shortcut on your desktop and you can double-click it to run Starry Night.
